MEET OLIVER – Young adult male, perhaps 2 or 3 years of age, running loose for a long time when owner moved away. His short coat is merle in red and white, reminiscent of ACD (American Cattle Dog) in body and face, with some pit mixed in. He probably weighs 45 lbs or so. Evaluated 2/20/10.
Oliver was described by shelter staff as a very sweet dog, and indeed, he is that. He approaches both carefully and hopefully, eager for affection and ready to be friendly if encouraged. With only a little guidance, he begins to follow directions about not jumping and is warm and appropriate in his response to being touched. He is bright and biddable, adapting quickly to leashing and responding well to direction to sit and to come along. He easily ran between two handlers when called, sitting upon each arrival as he was asked. There was no fear, nor any sign of guarding or aggression toward people, and none toward an unfamiliar adult dog to whom he was introduced. He walked calmly past other dogs who were kenneled nearby. He has a soft mouth and likes to lean against one’s leg, quietly enjoying being stroked. He is observant and clearly tries to fit in. There was no objection to being touched anywhere on his body. Oliver will make a strong attachment and be an excellent, loyal companion who will like being included in the life of his family. He is eager to learn and will thrive on training methods that are positive and consistent.
